SHABBAT SCHEDULE

!PLEASE hELP WITH MINYANIM

Shalom,

Rabbanit Devorah and myself will be out of town this Shabbat.

I would greatly appreciate your personal commitment to make it to the Bet Knesset tonight at 6:35pm for Kabbalat Shabbat, and tomorrow - on Shabbat - at 9:00am. Both men and women can help us create our beautiful Shabbat atmosphere by attending this weekend.

Shabbat will be under the guidance of my father and our regulars, whom I trust wholeheartedly to run Shabbat services in the spirit of Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim. May Hashem bless you two-fold, Amen!

Just a reminder that there will not be a Shabbat lunch at the Bet Knesset this week.

I can't wait to see you all when I return this Monday, b'ezrat Hashem!

Wishing you only blessings and goodness,

Rabbi Yonatan Halevy

PS Echoing a thought from my previous travels...

As I sit here writing to you from Madera,  I cannot help but be overwhelmed with gratitude to you and your families at how much we have grown together! Knowing that wherever I may be in the world, each and every one of you do your part to hold up the fort and make our Kehillah the spiritual fortress it is, makes me so proud to be your Rabbi. I love you dearly and wish you a most uplifting Shabbat!

Eruv Tavshilin: When Yom Tov goes into Shabbat

Understanding Eruv Tavshilin

In the event that you will not make your own Eruv Tavshilin, Rabbi Yonatan will make a public Eruv for you and the entire community.

Please read the Halachot below, from the Bet Midrash of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l.

The Eruv Tavshilin One Should Prepare this Year (Rosh Hashanah-5778)

When Yom Tov coincides with Erev Shabbat (Friday), one should place an Eruv Tavshilin, as we shall now explain.

What is an Eruv Tavshilin?
This year (5778), the second day of Rosh Hashanah will fall out on Friday, Erev Shabbat. Our Sages prohibited cooking on Yom Tov for Shabbat without placing an “Eruv Tavshilin,” which is placing (designating) bread and a cooked food on Erev Yom Tov (Wednesday) for Shabbat (i.e. to be eaten on Shabbat) in order for it to be recognizable that one is not beginning to cook or bake on Yom Tov for Shabbat; rather, one is merely concluding this preparation.

Explanation of the Above
In honor of Yom Tov, our Sages prohibited cooking on Yom Tov for Shabbat (in order for Yom Tov not to appear like a regular weekday with regards to Shabbat). However, if one begins cooking for Shabbat on Erev Yom Tov (i.e. before the onset of the holiday) and merely concludes on Yom Tov, this does not constitute a lack of respect for Yom Tov. We therefore leave bread and a cooked food on Erev Yom Tov to be eaten on Shabbat in order to show that one has already begun preparing foods for Shabbat before the onset of Yom Tov and that on Yom Tov itself, one is merely finishing off what one has already started. If one did not place an Eruv Tavshilin, one may not cook on Yom Tov for Shabbat.

The Proper Way to Prepare the Eruv
There are several laws regarding the bread and cooked food one must leave for the Eruv Tavshilin. It is customary to leave bread (amounting to a weight of approximately fifty-four grams) and a hard-boiled egg. When one takes the bread and hard-boiled egg on Erev Yom Tov (Wednesday), one recites: “Baruch Ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech Ha’Olam Asher Kideshanu Be’mitzvotav Ve’tzivanu Al Mitzvat Eruv.” One must include Hashem’s name while reciting this blessing. After reciting the blessing, one should say: “With this Eruv, we shall be permitted to bake, cook, light candles, and do anything necessary on Yom Tov for Shabbat.” One then saves the bread and cooked food and (preferably) eats them on Shabbat night or any other time on Shabbat.

A Public Eruv
In most places, the rabbis of the city customarily make an Eruv Tavshilin in a special way that will benefit those who have forgotten to make one. Thus, if one forgets to make an Eruv Tavshilin but the local rabbi has made an Eruv in this way, one may rely on the Eruv of the rabbi and one may cook on Yom Tov for Shabbat. Nevertheless, it is preferable for each individual to make an Eruv Tavshilin in his own home.

Concluding Shabbat Preparations as Early as Possible
Although one has made an Eruv Tavshilin, it is preferable to finish all works one is performing on Yom Tov for Shabbat as early on in the day as possible and not to carry on until close to the onset of Shabbat. Nevertheless, if one was delayed for whatever reason, one may continue to prepare until a several minutes before sunset.

Candle-Lighting for Shabbat this Year
On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, candles should be lit approximately twenty minutes before sunset, for after this time, the day already takes on the sanctity of Shabbat and lighting candles is forbidden. One may prepare the Shabbat candles during Yom Tov itself.

Parashat Ki Tetze - Shabbat Shalom! Hurricane Relief!

PLEASE READ: End-of-summer Appeal

We still have not made it out of our situation and are sending this again!

As you may know, these months before the High Holidays are the most financially pressing for any community, especially one as small as ours. Even when our income slows down during the summer months, our expenses stay the same so that we may continue providing the wonderful experience we all enjoy at Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim.

Kindly consider becoming a member, upgrading your membership, sponsoring Friday night dinner or Shabbat Kiddush - or simply sending in a general donation!

Thank you!

Please click here to access our online donation page!

hurricane harvey relief

Hurricane Harvey has devastated the entire Houston community, including it's Jewish community. We must get involved and help those in need!

Two ways to help!

1. Charity. While KSH does not promote one relief fund over the other, many have suggested donating to the Rubenstein JCC Harvey Relief Fund.

2. Donations. If you would like to donate essentials such as clothes and other non-food items, you are welcome to drop them off at KSH this Sunday from 7:30am - 10:30am. Thank you to Paulette Millander who has volunteered to collect these items and send them to the proper destination in Houston.

May Hashem send much love, light and healing to all those affected!

Yashan Notice from the Rabbi - PLEASE READ

YASHAN SEASON: KSH KOSHER GUIDELINES

FROM THE RABBI

Dearest friends and community members,

As the Yashan season comes to a close, Rabbi Yoseph Herman of the "Guide to Chodosh", has informed us of the dates that Chadash products are estimated to be reaching the shelves. The cutoff date I will be observing this year is August 27th.

FREE: Scroll down for a FREE chapter on Yashan from Rabbi Yonatan's book "Yehi Shalom"!

What is Yashan?

In simple terms, Jews are only allowed to eat products of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, rye and oat) if they have been harvested, or at the very least planted, before the previous year’s Pesach (Passover). This means that all grain must have been in the earth before Pesach in order for it to be Kosher, or "Yashan" (literally: old [grain]) for the following year. All grains which have been planted after Pesach, are not Kosher, or "Chadash" (literally: new [grain]) until next year’s Pesach has passed.

Halachah or Custom?

It is important to note that these Halachot are not a Minhag (custom), not Rabbinic in nature, nor a minority opinion. These rules follow original Jewish teachings of the Torah, Talmud, Rambam and Maran HaShulchan Aruch. Sepharadic (and some Ashkenazi) communities throughout the ages have strictly observed these laws of Kosher, and we at Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim are proud to uphold these traditions today.

Kosher Guidelines

We therefore ask of all our friends and members: please be considerate of these Kosher guidelines when cooking, baking or purchasing food for the community. All grains and flour you purchase by August 27th are still Yashan, so there is still time to stock up! Also, Ralph's in La Jolla, as well as the groceries in Los Angeles, provide a variety of Yashan products throughout this period until Pesach.

Simple Formula

Yashan = Acceptable = All grain products (cookies, cakes, bread, flour, etc) purchased by August 27th; or purchased after August 27th with special Yashan certification.

Chadash = Not acceptable = All grain products (cookies, cakes, bread, flour, etc) purchased after August 27th without special Yashan certification.

Help With Yashan

The Rabbanit and I are stocking up on Yashan ingredients for the coming year (until Pesach). We also have flour for our personal and communal use which can be borrowed in case of need. Please do not rely on us, as we have ran out in previous years.

If you bake often for Kiddush or Bet Knesset events, please stock up on flour from Costco and perhaps we will be able to reimburse you for a reasonable amount of flour.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, I am available like last year for your every need. Please call or text (858) 752-1025.

Wishing you a beautiful summer in the merit of this precious Mitzvah!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Yonatan Halevy

YASHAN UPDATE: PRODUCTS AND DATES

AN UPDATE FROM RABBI YOSEPH HERMAN

We give below the final estimates for the upcoming Chadash season. These are based on the US Department of Agriculture harvest reports and preliminary information from mashgichim. The dates are identical to our starting estimates of last year.

We expect the Chadash grain started to appear in products as follows:

1. Freshly baked items using spring wheat, including breads, challahs, bagels, rolls, pizza and some cakes and cookies may be Chadash in the Midwest after the PURCHASE DATE of July 29. Elsewhere in the US, this date would be Aug 12.

2. Packaged foods from spring wheat may be Chadash after the PACKING date of Jul 29, or the PURCHASE date of Aug 12.

3. Noodles and pasta may be Chadash after the PACKING date of Aug 13 and the PURCHASE date of Aug 27.

4. Barley, such as pearled barley, may be Chadash after the PACKING date of Aug 9 and PURCHASE date of Aug 23.

5. Oats: Oats in all products, including cereals, may be Chadash starting with a PACKING date of Jul 20, PURCHASE date of Aug 3.

6. Barley malt (also listed in the ingredients as “malt”) may be Chadash as of the packing date of Nov 15 for beer and Dec 15 for other packaged foods. Package codes should be checked after the purchase date of Dec 15 for beer made from barley malt and Mar 15 for malt in other products.

Please note that the early starting date for oats is a Chumrah (stringency), based on the start of the oats harvest which is already on the way now. However, many cereal companies keep old oats in storage and start using Chadash later. General Mills (Cheerios, etc) usually starts at least 1-2 months later. Quaker some years started this early, other years later. To be sure, purchase oats cereals for storage now. It is too early now for mashgichim to be able to find out the oats starting date for this year for specific companies.

Laws and Customs

Customs of Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim
Rabbi Yonatan Y. Halevt

Some of our more notable customs - from Rabbi Yonatan:

1. Dim the lights both at night and morning of Tisha B'Av. Perhaps the light of the Aron Kodesh should be left on, and the others dimmed.

2. We sit on the floor for Arvit and Shacharit - please stack purple chairs and do not flip them to sit on them.

3. We flip the purple velvet cover of the Bimah so it is upside down.

4. We take off the crowns from the Torah.

6. We lift the Torah inside out (writing facing lifter) on the morning of Tisha B'Av.

7. During Shacharit, we replace "Az Yashir" with the entire Parashat Ha'azinu.

8. We wear our Tefillin during Shacharit of Tisha B'Av, not during Mincha. We do not protest those who wish to do the reverse, as is the custom in other places.

Halachot

Halachot from the Bet Midrash of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l

Some Laws Pertaining to Tisha B'Av

There are five categories of abstinence which must be observed on Tisha Be’av: Eating and drinking, washing one’s self, rubbing one’s body with oils or lotions, wearing leather shoes, and marital relations. Our Sages also prohibited learning Torah on Tisha Be’av, for the words of Torah gladden the heart. The only portions of Torah that one may delve into on Tisha Be’av are the book of Iyov (Job), the prophecies regarding the destruction of the Temple in the book of Yirmeya (Jeremiah), the portions of Midrash and Talmud regarding the destruction of the Temple, the laws of mourning, and the like. One may likewise learn Mussar works which arouse one to repent and humble the heart.

On Erev Tisha Be’av, one may only eat until several minutes before sunset. The five categories of abstinence we have mentioned above take affect beginning from sunset.

One may not wash one’s body on Tisha Be’av with either hot water or cold; this applies to one’s entire body or even just partially. One may not even stick one’s finger into water (for pleasure). Thus, on the morning of Tisha Be’av, one should wash one’s hands (“Netilat Yadayim”) only until one’s knuckles the way one washes the rest of the year, i.e. three times on each hand while alternating hands, and then recite the blessing of “Al Netilat Yadayim.” After using the restroom, one should wash one’s hands the same way, only until the knuckles.

One should not wash one’s face on the morning of Tisha Be’av; rather, after washing one’s hands, before drying them while they are still wet, one may rub them over one’s eyes. If one has eye residue or any other filth in or around one’s eyes, one may wash the affected area. If one is extremely concerned about one’s personal hygiene and does not feel at ease with himself without washing one’s face in the morning, one may indeed do so on the morning of Tisha Be’av.

A new bride who is still within thirty days of her marriage may wash her face on the morning of Tisha Be’av so that she does not become repulsive to her husband.

Regarding the fast of the Seventeenth of Tammuz (and other such public fasts), if it is extremely difficult for one to abstain from brushing one’s teeth on the morning of the fast, one may act leniently and brush one’s teeth while taking care not to swallow even a drop of water. Additionally, one must take care not to put a “Revi’it” (81 ml, approximately 2.7 fluid oz.) of water into one’s mouth at once. Nevertheless, on Tisha Be’av one should not act leniently unless one  will suffer immensely without doing so or if one suffers from bad breath, in which case, one may indeed act leniently on the condition that one tilts one’s mouth downwards in order that the water not reach one’s throat (in addition to the aforementioned conditions). One may not rely on this leniency on Yom Kippur though.
