Shiviti Bet Midrash of New York: New course begins February 27th!
I am excited to finally announce the launch of our Shiviti Bet Midrash of New York curriculum for 2023!
What is Shiviti New York? The four main elements of this initiative are: A) to begin a new series of weekly classes on Zoom geared to Shiviti members in the Eastern time zone; B) these virtual classes will be supplemented by an in-person visit and learning-session with the Rabbanit and I who come out every two months or so; C) possibly an annual or bi-annual Shabbaton with all of us together in one place; D) ultimately, all of this is in the hope of building a like-minded community of learning-oriented friends both virtually and physically.
About The Course For the first time ever, I will be introducing a topic to the larger Shiviti audience that I have never presented outside of our local San Diego community in a course titled “Mishpat Tzedek: In-Depth Studies In Jewish National Law”.
I invite you to join us as we delve into some of the most sensitive and profound details of Jewish national law, and explore how our lawmakers approached the most controversial and relevant social justice issues of our time. Text-based and ongoing, this course will offer an inside view of the legal system that provides the basis for our national vision of a just and truly free society.
This course will largely be based on the Rambam’s Laws of Sanhedrin, with a special focus on the commentary of Rabbi Chaim David Halevy, former Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yafo.
Who Can Join and Hybrid Course Structure This course is open to participants of all backgrounds and learning levels who appreciate the Shiviti philosophy and are dedicated to serious study together.
The Shiviti Bet Midrash of New York was founded to provide learning opportunities for Shiviti members on the East Coast of the United States. Therefore, classes will be held in Eastern Time but will always remain open to Shiviti members across the world.
As mentioned above, this course will be a hybrid of 1) weekly online classes, combined with 2) periodic in-person classes with the Rabbanit and I joining at a central location in New York. In-person class dates will be announced ahead of time so all participants in the region can have reasonable time to add the dates to their schedules.
Cost As a rule, Torah study at Shiviti is always free of charge.
Start Date and Class Times I hope to start this course on February 6th, 2023. I am available to begin class on Mondays as early as 9:00pm Eastern Time, and as late as 10:00pm Eastern Time. Once all interested participants will join our Shiviti New York WhatsApp chat (silent), I will send a message asking people for their preferred class time.
Invite Friends If you feel you have a friend or family member who would be interested in joining us at Shiviti New York, please have them send an email to info@shiviti.org and we will be happy to add them to our WhatsApp group!
So looking forward to learning together with you! Rabbi Yonatan Halevy
