3. Matanot LaEvyonim - Gifts to the Poor
We are obligated to perform the Mitzvah of “Matanot La’Evyonim” on Purim day which is the distribution of two monetary gifts, one to each needy person.
If you would like to appoint Rabbi Yonatan as your messenger, you can use the convenient form at this link to perform this holy Mitzvah.
It is customary to donate money before Purim as “a commemoration of the Half-Shekel” which was donated by the entire Jewish nation when the Bet Hamikdash stood.
If you would like to perform this Minhag with actual silver coins, you are welcome to come to Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim any day before Purim, or before Megillah reading on Wednesday. We have three silver coins (generously donated by the Savin family) for this purpose.
If you will be unable to do so, you can use the convenient form at this link to perform this precious custom.

Israel Prayers
Dearest friends and members,
As Devorah and I journey our homeland - for the first time with all our children, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude to Hashem. It is with that in mind that our hearts overflow with love how you have been so good to us and this beautiful community we call home!
We would like to give back in the form of praying for you and yours at various holy spots around Israel.
(Also, since we have been asked many times to bring Tzedakah to those who need or for other Mitzvah purposes, we have added that option to our form. It is just that - optional!)
May HaKadosh Baruch Hu answer all your Tefillot and may you pray for us to return rejuvenated and ready for an incredible new calendar year, full of productivity and growth together with all of our friends in our beautiful community, Amen!
With so much love and so many blessings, Rabbi Yonatan Halevy
New Kollel Series: Rambam with commentary of HaRav Yosef Kapach (Qafih)
RAMBAM ORDERS
Just a reminder that we will begin a new series studying the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah with HaRav Kapach’s commentary every Monday and Tuesday from 8:30-9:00pm.
Any other versions of Mishneh Torah you have will NOT match the text we will be using together. Therefore, we are placing order of books from Rav Kapach’s institute. The books are $45 each, and include air mail shopping from Israel.
Unless you have paid Marlene already, we don’t have your name on the list of orders. Please send an email to info@shiviti.org to put your name on the last and you can remit payment to Marlene at our next Kollel class.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!

I'm reaching out again - as I board my flight to the Holy Land!
We have just a few hours left until the new calendar year begins and I am asking you to partner with us in promising a bright spiritual future for our community!
How can you help? Just answer YES to one of these three questions!
1. Membership. Are you ready to become a proud member of Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim, or - if you already are a member - upgrade your membership?
2. Rent. Would you join us in our mission of impacting lives at the Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim campus by generously sponsoring a month (or half-month) of rent?
I'm reaching out personally to remind you that the 2019 tax year is coming to a close and let you know that we are still quite a way from covering our budget so that we can continue operating the community that we all call home. Please - can you help?
If you have already answered this appeal, kindly accept this as a warm "thank you"!
Our 5th Year! End-Of-Year Message from the Rabbi
Dear Friend,
As we wrap up our 5th year at Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim (can you believe it?!), it is with tremendous gratitude to Hashem for His unwavering help - and to you for your unfaltering dedication - that we can once again declare this year to be one of tremendous success! Our community has continued to be a spiritual powerhouse, impacting innumerable lives!
Be Proud! Numbers You Must See This year alone, we have successfully engaged thousands of people through our diverse programs. Whether connecting with us through:
Our welcoming Bet Knesset, Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim;
Or through our educational center, the Shiviti Bet Midrash and its 572 (up since the 416 at the time of our founding) annual classes;
Our Bet Midrash which has expanded beyond San Diego's borders with regular classes in Los Angeles, as well as lectures and scholar-in-residence Shabbatot in New York, London, and Cape Town! This last year, we have blazed new trails in two continents!
Enjoying one of our 248 lively and stimulating Shabbat or holiday meals where the discussion is as delightful as the over 5,000 portions of food served;
Our intellectually and physically rigorous outdoors GLiTSGirls' Leadership Training Seminar, led by Rabbanit Devorah, with 6 new graduates fulfilling Shiviti's unique vision of promoting female leadership among our youth;
Watching one of our 767 (two years ago: 550, and the year before: 438) YouTube videos or Facebook live-streamed events and programs – which have reached 66,091 (last year: 31,894, and the year before: 15,362) views;
Welcoming 6 new souls (last year: 5) to the Jewish people and preparing to do so with a dozen more dear friends currently enrolled in our Foundations Conversion Course, a branch of our very own Shiviti Bet Din;
Receiving prompt and accurate answers regarding Kosher for Pesach food products on our Pesach Kashrut Forum which currently has 1,769 (last year: 728) members;
Interacting with people through our international Shiviti Learning Forum, currently boasting 1,488 (last year: 596) active members hailing from the United States, Canada, Israel, South Africa, the United Kingdom among others!
Each individual has found in us their spiritual home in which they can thrive and soar to new heights. You have not just enhanced your own life – but together we have created the truly inclusive Shiviti family! Thank you!
We Are Building Our Future This is your Kehillah. This is your Shiviti movement. This is your spiritual home. This is your oasis for stimulating study. We are building this for each other, for our children, and for our friends – and this is your opportunity to take an active role in our future.
Our Year-End Campaign Goals Today, we are reaching out to you as we wrap up the 2019 calendar year. During the final weeks of this year, our two main goals are:
Everyone A Member! Our goal is to encourage each and every individual who benefits from any of our Shiviti programming, to become a member of the Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim community. This attitude of being in a mutually beneficial relationship with our community is what allows us to remain self-sufficient and continue our proud tradition of not needing to constantly solicit funds from our dear friends. (Monthly membership rates are: Single, $72; Family, $101; Donor, $180 or $360.)
Sponsoring a month of rent. What helped us flourish this past year – was the generous sponsorship of rent at our main campus, which currently costs us $1602 a month. Just 12 such monthly sponsorships, or even half-month sponsorships at $801, will take a great financial burden off of our community and allow us to focus on the things that are truly important.
My Personal Request I cannot afford to feel embarrassed when asking you to make a donation - just like you should never feel embarrassed when you utilize any of the numerous resources we proudly offer!
I ask you to consider 1)becoming a proud member or 2)upgrading to a higher membership level, 3) generously sponsoring a month of rent, 4) or even just making a special, one-time, year-end, tax-deductible donation of $180, $72, $36 – or whatever you can afford – to help us meet our goal.
Rabbi and Rabbanit will be heading out of town the morning right after Sheva Berachot. If you are able to help with set up and break down of the Bet Knesset, kindly include that in your email.
A number of our Kehillah members expressed interest in joining our learning series despite being unable to travel to Los Angeles to attend in person.
1. IF you live outside of Los Angeles (or live in Los Angeles and plan to attend the future classes in person)
2. AND you wish to be a serious member of the new class (printing handouts, doing homework, watching the videos, etc)
3. PLEASE send a message with your email address (@gmail.com is preferred) to info@shiviti.org
So that we may add you to our Google Classroom!
Wishing you a beautiful day, Rabbi Yonatan Halevy PS Please do not join the Classroom out of curiosity as inactive members will be removed.

In preparation for Chanukah, Rabbi Yonatan has collected, arranged, translated and transliterated our community's Chanukah customs, fused into one harmonious, heartfelt experience.
We are sending you a digital version of this new pamphlet to download and print for your very own Chanukah table!
Many thanks go to Marlene Rissman and Rabbanit Devorah for their valuable insight.
Rabbi Yonatan and Rabbanit Devorah warmly invite you to participate in their nightly candle lighting.
Join us for a private candle-lighting ceremony, followed by joyous singing and dancing, as well as light Chanukah refreshments!
Candle lighting will take place each night of Chanukah at 6:30pm, in order to allow you to light first at home. (Please note: this year, we will not be hosting on the first night of Chanukah)
You are welcome to bring any Kosher refreshments. We kindly ask that you only arrive after 6:30pm. Thank you!
