Hoshanah Rabbah, the seventh day of Sukkot is a semi-holiday in its own right. Still counted among the days of Chol HaMoed, this day’s name means “the great hoshanah”. A hoshanah is a series of poems calling upon HaKadosh Barcuh Hu to rescue and redeem the Jewish people, primarily by sending rain, and was viewed by the rabbis of the Talmud as a mini-Yom Kippur. The seven Hoshanot prayers are recited in seven Hakafot around the Torah scrolls, and Sepharadic Jews also recite Selichot prayers.
Join us TOMORROW Sunday at 7:00am for Shacharit followed by Hoshanot!

Please note that Shabbat Lunch, Shabbat afternoon Mincha, and Seudah Shelishit will all be held in the Rabbi and Rabbanit's Sukkah.
Special Kiddush Lunch THIS Shabbat!
A special Kiddush Lunch in the Rabbi and Rabbanit's Sukkah is generously ponsored by the Sigman family in memory of Yisroel ben Yaakov z"l. May his Neshamah have an Aliyah in Gan Eden, Amen!
A story sent to us by the Sigman family:
"Yisroel was born in Russia. During WWI, at the age of 17, he was to be conscripted into the Russian army. As a Jew this meant 25 years of service. So he and another Jew fled on foot. They walked through Siberia and made it to Manchuria, China. They were nearly captured by the Russian police when a Jewish man they’d never met before saved them. Afterwards they made it to Korea. From Korea they got to Japan. From Japan they boarded a banana boat to the US. Once in Washington state, he made it across the continent to New York City where he had some family. He settled there and started a sweater factory. He used to proceeds from the factory to finance brining his relatives to the US. Once a relative arrived, he offered them a job in his factory. He supported the entire family this way throughout the second world war. After the war, he found one family member who had survived, a niece, and immediately brought her to the US and into the business as well. His lifelong lessons on the importance of family, hard work, and ahavas Yisroel have been passed down to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren."

It has been a long time since I have had to reach out to you for financial assistance. But for the sake of our beautiful community – I need to reach out for your help to make ends meet this summer.
In the last fouryears, we have built a glorious Kehillah together, with the help of Hashem. Our Kehillah is a source of pride and joy for each and everyone of us, and a shining example for so many others who are affected by it around the world.
The summer months are always difficult, but this summer in particular, I find myself trying to keep this ship sailing and I am asking you to please partner with me in ensuring that our Kehillah can sail smoothly through the summer!
If you have already answered the Rabbi's appeal, please accept this as a warm "thank you"!

Rabbi's Message from Facebook
We have just received the tragic news that our dear friend and Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim member, Angel Gonzalez, has tragically passed away.
As this news is spreading rapidly, we have decided to share this post before sending out an official email.
We don’t have any further details at the moment, but we will share them with you as they come in.
In the meantime:
1) If anyone needs to speak with Rabbanit Devorah or myself, we will be coming back into town tonight and will make ourselves available to you immediately.
2) It seems that his family has set up a fundraiser to lay him to rest with the dignity he deserves. I am not in touch directly to know who is responsible for it, but we encourage you to help, however you can: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-if-angel-gonzalez…
On behalf of the entire Shiviti family, I pray that he may rest in peace and that his precious family receive comfort from Heaven.
With much sadness, Yonatan Halevy

Tisha B'Av - Halachot
On Erev Tisha Be’av, our Sages prohibited eating meat and drinking wine during the last meal before the onset of the fast of Tisha Be’av held after halachic midday. They likewise forbade eating two cooked foods during this meal. Nevertheless, this year, 5779, since the fast of Tisha Be’av is observed on Sunday, “Erev Tisha Be’av” will thus coincide with Shabbat. Thus, in honor of Shabbat during which observance of mourning customs is forbidden, our Sages said that during this meal (which is actually Seuda Shelishit, the third Shabbat meal and the last meal before the fast) one may eat and drink one’s fill and “one may serve on his table like a feast of King Solomon during his reign.”
On Erev Tisha Be’av, the five categories of abstinence take effect immediately at sunset. For this reason, one must remove one’s leather shoes immediately at sunset (it is nevertheless permissible to wear non-leather shoes). However, on years like this, 5779, when Tisha Be’av falls out on Motza’ei Shabbat, one should not remove one’s leather shoes immediately at sunset in honor of Shabbat; rather, one should leave one’s leather shoes on until after nightfall which is approximately twenty minutes after sunset. One should then recite, “Baruch Ha’Mavdil Ben Kodesh Le’Chol,” remove one’s leather shoes, change into weekday clothing, and head to the synagogue in order to pray Arvit and recite Eicha and other lamentations.
The Halachot for this years Tisha B'Av are numerous. Please visit this website for all the relevant laws and customs: http://halachayomit.co.il/en/default.aspx
