We are making history in San Diego once again! Soft Matzah is coming back to town!
The History Every year we reach the famous words in the "Korech" section of the Haggadah:
"In memory of the Temple according to Hillel. This is what Hillel would do when the Temple existed: He would wrap the Matzah and Marror and eat them together, in order to fulfill what is stated, (Exodus 12:15): "You should eat it upon Matzot and Marrorim."
How do you wrap a thin, crunchy cracker? You can't!
So how did Hillel do it? He ate soft Matzah, which is the original form of unleavened bread that our forefathers and mothers ate. The best part is that this Matzah is Kasher for Pesach for both Sepharadim and Ashkenazim!
The News We have once again secured a shipment of special Shemurah Matzah flour, and are setting up a Matzah bakery on Sunday, April 14th - and are asking you for help to make it happen!
A number of families have already joined us in donating $100 to the Matzah effort, and will - aside from the tremendous Mitzvah of sponsoring this effort - will recieve fresh Matzot for their Seder!
Want To Join? We are reaching out to offer you this tremendous oppurtunity - do you want to sponsor $100 and make history?
Please let me know as soon as you can by responding to this email and/or clicking the link above!
Wishing you a holiday of true freedom - and soft Matzah! Rabbi Yonatan Y. Halevy

PPS If you wish to join in the baking process at our Matzah bakery please let me know by replying to this email that you will join us this Sunday! No sponsorship necessary!

Pele Yoetz, Rabbi Eliezer Papo - On Assisting to Print Holy Books
“The printing press has brought great good into the world by virtue of facilitating the increase of Torah study and the dissemination of its wellsprings... It is appropriate for wealthy individuals, members of the nation of the God of Avraham, to generously open their hands unto them.
By doing so, they will have an equal share with the author… Go out and see that there is almost no other gift of money that will be considered as great a Mitzvah as this! Every other expenditure for a Mitzvah lasts only the duration of the performance of the Mitzvah.
But the merit of the person who gives money for the purpose of publishing a book lasts forever. The merit of the masses belongs to a person who brings righteousness to the community. His virtue will precede and follow him. How fortunate he is! How good is his portion! He has acquired a good name, words of Torah, the life of the World to Come, and also in this world his money has increased.”
English Translation of HaRav Yaakov Peretz's Approbation
With the help of Heaven – My assistance is from Hashem, Creator of Heavens and Earth
Approbation to the book “Yehi Shalom”
I hereby wish to acknowledge and cherish the prestigious alumni of our Yeshiva “Midrash Sepharadi” of the Jewish Quarter, which is adjacent to the site of our holy Kotel.
The Chacham [the author] walks on the path of straight, is of sweet ways, is pleasing to the people and is also pleasing to Hashem – the honorable Torah scholar Rabbi Yonatan Halevy shlit”a, Rav of the Sepharadic community in San Diego, California.
He acted upon his heart’s desire to compile a work on the laws of Pesach and Kashrut. According to what has been made known to me, the book is written according to Halachah with accurate explanations and my hands support his fully.
I hereby bless him: May it be the will of HaKadosh Baruch Hu that you be successful and wise in all your endeavors, and you shall merit to spread and glorify the Torah; and to draw close our brothers of the holy flock, the holy nation of Hashem, to Torah, awe of Hashem, proper character traits and integrity.
May you merit to publish many more valuable books which will be of benefit to the public, through which you shall uplift them to great heights in Torah and awe of Hashem.
I hereby affix my signature to give honor to the Torah and to those who immerse themselves in her,
Eved Hashem Yaakov ben HaRav Yosef Peretz
Jerusalem, May She Be Built Speedily In Our Days Today, the Second of Adar II 5774
The book is named “Yehi Shalom” (יהי שלום) – Yehi (יהי) is the acronym of Y’onatan Y'akov H'alevy (י'ונתן י'עקב ה'לוי). Shalom (שלום) is the name of his honorable father.

Rabbinic Violence Part 2: Emasculated Rabbis "In my last article, I shared that I believe this violence stems from their feeling that they – and they alone have a monopoly on Judaism. In this article, I am not challenging that, but rather adding to it. In addition to their unimaginable arrogance, they suffer from tremendous ignorance. This combination has caused devastating damage in the Jewish community..." Click here to read more!

We have just a few hours left until the new calendar year begins and I am asking you to partner with us in promising a bright spiritual future for our community!
How can you help? Just answer YES to one of these three questions!
1. Membership. Are you ready to become a proud member of Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim, or - if you already are a member - upgrade your membership?
2. Rent. Would you join us in our mission of impacting lives at the Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim campus by generously sponsoring a month (or half-month) of rent?
As we wrap up our 4th year at KehillatShaarHaShamayim (can you believe it?!), it is with tremendous gratitude to Hashem for his unwavering help - and to you for your unfaltering dedication - that we can once again declare this year to be one of tremendous success! Our community has continued to be a spiritual powerhouse, impacting innumerable lives!
Be Proud! Numbers You Must See This year alone, we have successfully engaged thousands of people through our diverse programs. Whether connecting with us through:
Our welcoming Bet Knesset, KehillatShaarHaShamayim;
Or through our educational center, the Shiviti Bet Midrash and its 572 (up since the 416 at the time of our founding) annual classes;
Our Bet Midrash which has expanded beyond San Diego's borders through our newest branch in the form of regular classes in Los Angeles.
Enjoying one of our 248 lively and stimulating Shabbat or holiday meals where the discussion is as delightful as the over 5,000 portions of food served;
Watching one of our 673 (last year: 550, and the year before: 438) YouTube videos or Facebook live-streamed events and programs – which have reached 31,894 (last year: 15,362, and the year before: 5,960) views;
Welcoming 5 new souls (last year: 6) to the Jewish people and preparing to do so with a dozen more dear friends currently enrolled in our Foundations Conversion Course, a branch of our very own Shiviti Bet Din;
Receiving prompt and accurate answers regarding Kosher for Pesach food products on our Pesach Kashrut Forum which currently has 728 members;
Interacting with people through our international Shiviti Learning Forum, currently boasting 596 active members hailing from the United States, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom among others!
Each individual has found in us their spiritual home in which they can thrive and soar to new heights. You have not just enhanced your own life – but together we have created the truly inclusive Shiviti family! Thank you!
We Are Building Our Future This is your Kehillah. This is your Shiviti movement. This is your spiritual home. This is your oasis for stimulating study. We are building this for each other, for our children, and for our friends – and this is your opportunity to take an active role in our future.
Our Year-End Campaign Goals Today, we are reaching out to you as we wrap up the 2018 calendar year. During the final weeks of this year, our two main goals are:
Everyone A Member! Our goal is to encourage each and every individual who benefits from our programming, to become a member of the KehillatShaarHaShamayim Family. This attitude of being in a mutually beneficial relationship with our community is what allows us to remain self-sufficient and continue our proud tradition of not needing to constantly solicit funds from our dear friends. (Monthly membership rates are: Single, $72; Family, $101; Donor, $180 or $360.)
Sponsoring 12 months of rent. What helped us flourish this past year – was the generous sponsorship of rent at our main campus, which currently costs us $1591 a month. Just 12 such monthly sponsorships, or even half-month sponsorships at $795, will take a great financial burden off of our community and allow us to focus on the things that are truly important.
My Personal Request Unlike past years, I cannot afford to feel embarrassed, asking you to make a donation - just like you should never feel embarrassed when you utilize any of the numerous resource we proudly offer!
I ask you to consider becoming a proud member or upgrading to a higher membership level, generously sponsoring a month of rent, or even just making a special, one-time, year-end, tax-deductible donation of $180, $72, $36 – or whatever you can afford – to help us meet our goal.
