Our 4th Year! End-Of-Year Appeal from the Rabbi

Dear Friend,

As we wrap up our 4th year at Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim (can you believe it?!), it is with tremendous gratitude to Hashem for his unwavering help - and to you for your unfaltering dedication - that we can once again declare this year to be one of tremendous success! Our community has continued to be a spiritual powerhouse, impacting innumerable lives!

Be Proud! Numbers You Must See
This year alone, we have successfully engaged thousands of people through our diverse programs. Whether connecting with us through:

Our welcoming Bet Knesset, Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim;
Or through our educational center, the Shiviti Bet Midrash and its 572 (up since the 416 at the time of our founding) annual classes;
Our Bet Midrash which has expanded beyond San Diego's borders through our newest branch in the form of regular classes in Los Angeles.
Enjoying one of our 248 lively and stimulating Shabbat or holiday meals where the discussion is as delightful as the over 5,000 portions of food served;
Watching one of our 673 (last year: 550, and the year before: 438) YouTube videos or Facebook live-streamed events and programs – which have reached 31,894 (last year: 15,362, and the year before: 5,960) views;
Welcoming 5 new souls (last year: 6) to the Jewish people and preparing to do so with a dozen more dear friends currently enrolled in our Foundations Conversion Course, a branch of our very own Shiviti Bet Din;
Receiving prompt and accurate answers regarding Kosher for Pesach food products on our Pesach Kashrut Forum which currently has 728 members;
Interacting with people through our international Shiviti Learning Forum, currently boasting 596 active members hailing from the United States, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom among others!

Each individual has found in us their spiritual home in which they can thrive and soar to new heights. You have not just enhanced your own life – but together we have created the truly inclusive Shiviti family! Thank you!

We Are Building Our Future
This is your Kehillah. This is your Shiviti movement. This is your spiritual home. This is your oasis for stimulating study. We are building this for each other, for our children, and for our friends – and this is your opportunity to take an active role in our future.

Our Year-End Campaign Goals
Today, we are reaching out to you as we wrap up the 2018 calendar year. During the final weeks of this year, our two main goals are:

Everyone A Member! Our goal is to encourage each and every individual who benefits from our programming, to become a member of the Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim Family. This attitude of being in a mutually beneficial relationship with our community is what allows us to remain self-sufficient and continue our proud tradition of not needing to constantly solicit funds from our dear friends. (Monthly membership rates are: Single, $72; Family, $101; Donor, $180 or $360.)
Sponsoring 12 months of rent. What helped us flourish this past year – was the generous sponsorship of rent at our main campus, which currently costs us $1591 a month. Just 12 such monthly sponsorships, or even half-month sponsorships at $795, will take a great financial burden off of our community and allow us to focus on the things that are truly important.

My Personal Request
Unlike past years, I cannot afford to feel embarrassed, asking you to make a donation - just like you should never feel embarrassed when you utilize any of the numerous resource we proudly offer!

Laws and Ideas based on the writings of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l

On the tenth day of the month of Tevet, the king of Babylon surrounded the city of Jerusalem in order to destroy it, as the verse in Yechezkel (chapter 24) states: “The word of Hashem was upon me on the tenth month (Tevet) of the ninth year saying, ‘Son of man, write for yourself the name of this day, for on the essence of this day did the king of Babylon besiege Jerusalem.’”

We therefore fast on the Tenth of Tevet in order to humble our hearts into repenting fully and to beseech Hashem to pity us and redeem us completely. The Rambam writes: “The entire Jewish nation fasts on days which tragedy has befallen Israel in order to awaken their hearts and open the pathways of repentance for them. This in turn will serve as a memorial of our grievous actions and the actions of our forefathers to which our current behavior can compare; and this eventually caused suffering to befall them and us. When we recall these things, it will cause us to return to the proper path, as the verse states, ‘And they will confess their sins and the sins of their fathers.’”

Everyone is obligated to fast on the tenth of Tevet, and no one may exclude himself. However, children, meaning boys under the age of thirteen and girls under the age of twelve, are completely exempt from this fast and they are not even obligated to fast for several hours. Even children who are intelligent enough to mourn over the destruction of the Holy Temple are exempt from these fasts as long as they have not yet reached the age of Bar/ Bat Mitzvah. Even if they would like to be stringent and fast, their parents should object to them doing so.

Pregnant and nursing women are exempt from the fast of the Tenth of Tevet and they may not be stringent and fast. The definition of “pregnant” regarding this Halacha is when the woman’s pregnancy is recognizable, meaning when at least three months have elapsed from the beginning of her pregnancy. However, if the pregnant woman suffers from pain and vomiting, she is exempt from the fast even in the beginning stages of her pregnancy, especially if forty days from the onset of her pregnancy have already elapsed.

Pregnant and nursing women are also exempt from the fasts of the Seventeenth of Tamuz and the Fast of Gedalya (their obligation to fast on Tisha Be’av will be explained at the appropriate time, G-d willing). Even if they wish to be stringent and fast, one must object to them doing so. Regarding this Halacha, “pregnant” is defined the same way as above, i.e. when three months of pregnancy have already elapsed. However, if she suffers from vomiting and pain, she is exempt from all of these fasts even before three months have passed, especially if forty days of pregnancy have elapsed.

Regarding the exemption of a nursing woman from these fasts as was mentioned above, Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef zt"l writes that even if this woman is no longer physically nursing her child, if she is within twenty-four months of giving birth and she feels immense weakness, she is exempt from these fasts. However, if she feels no unusual weakness or dizziness and the like, it is proper for her to be stringent and fast. Hagaon Harav Meir Mazuz Shlit”a, Rosh Yeshivat Kisseh Rachamim, rules likewise. Nevertheless, there are those who rule leniently regarding any woman who is within twenty-four months of giving birth, even if she does not experience any special weakness, that she is exempt from these fasts because she is usually busy dealing with matters of the house and the fast may weaken her.

The Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps!

Due to the tragic events of last Shabbat, we have hired private secuirty for this Shabbat's services - in addition to our own, in-house security - in order to create an atmosphere of safety for our Kehillah. Please feel safe to come to Bet Knesset with your families and enjoy a much-needed Shabbat experience. As a reminder, we have a general security meeting planned for this coming Monday night at 8:30pm.

A short memorial prayer will be recited for the holy Neshamot we lost.

Shalom,

Rabbanit Devorah and myself will be out of town this Shabbat.

I would greatly appreciate your personal commitment to make it to the Bet Knesset tonight at 6:00pm for Kabbalat Shabbat, and tomorrow - on Shabbat - at 9:00am. Both men and women can help us create our beautiful Shabbat atmosphere by attending this weekend.

Shabbat will be under the guidance of my father and our regulars, whom I trust wholeheartedly to run Shabbat services in the spirit of Kehillat Shaar HaShamayim. May Hashem bless you two-fold, Amen!

This Shabbat, we will join thousands of communities around the world in gathering together as a community and hearing words of inspiration from our Rabbi to prepare us for Yom Kippur!

We will each have lunch at our homes, and then join together at 5:30pm for Mincha followed by Seudah Shelishit. During Seudah Shelishit, we will hear the Rabbi's annual Shabbat Shuvah Derashah.

This is a private event being hosted in a private residence in Los Angeles and is not open to the general public. Our hosts have graciously extended an open invitation to any of our San Diego friends and members.
